The goal of the School Resource Officer Program (SRO) is to reduce the number of out of school suspensions at the middle and high school level in Craven County School System. By focusing on the reduction of discipline infractions, abusive language, assault and battery, and insubordination/Disrespect, the number of out of school suspensions will be reduced.

This reduction will lead to improve academic performance of our students, a decrease in criminal activity in the school community and a decrease in the juvenile arrest rate for Craven County.

Project Objectives:

Decrease monthly Out of School Suspensions at the Middle Schools, SRO will present to students various subjects related to law enforcement, character education sessions for high risk suspensions, conduct classes on alcohol, drugs and tobacco prevention and life skills programs, increase law enforcement (SRO) involvement in the school community, be familiar with all community agencies which offer assistance to delinquency prone youths, make himself/herself available to parents and faculty members for conferences, decrease the number of juvenile referrals in Craven County, assist in developing behavior contracts for high risk students, investigate criminal violations which involve students as suspects or victims and provide opportunity to appropriately divert students from the juvenile justice system
