Since September 11, 2001, the demands on state and local law enforcement have increased dramatically. As a result, already limited resources are being
stretched further at a time when our country needs every available officer out on the beat. Some local police departments are turning to civilian volunteers
to supplement their sworn force. These vital efforts will receive new support through the Volunteers in Police Service Program (VIPS). VIPS draws on the time and considerable talents of civilian volunteers and allows law enforcement professionals to better perform their frontline duties.
Citizens like you support law enforcement and public safety efforts in a variety of important ways. Citizens employ their specialized skills to meet a
particular community need, or by becoming public safety partners through their businesses or civic associations. Here are some examples of the types of
assignments citizens can take on to assist their local law enforcement agency:
The Havelock Police Department presently is using citizen volunteers in the programs listed below. We have had great success with our present programs
and are looking to expand to others.
Assist in Citizens Police Academies
Assist with typing reports, filing, answering phones, and other office tasks
Assist with special events
Participate in role-plays and training scenarios for officers
Staff a Department booth and distribute information on police services at community events
Participate in a Citizens Advisory Board
Assist with fingerprinting
Serve as Police Chaplain
