We are currently closely watching the tropical Atlantic basin. Though there is
no need for panic, there is a need to be prepared. Regardless of the track of
the storms currently in the Atlantic basin, we are going to have a rain event,
potentially heavy and saturating over a period of time in the near future,
beginning this weekend.
What you can do:
Make sure the culverts (the hole under your driveway in the ditch line) is
clear. One plugged culvert can make a street impassable, and all
the homes on that street are in danger of flooding.
Do not put trash or green waste (yard clippings, limbs) at the curb right
before the storm.
Secure or remove all loose objects that might become airborne in your yard.
Make sure you have an adequate supply of any medication, propane, and
gasoline that you may need in the event of power outages.
Do NOT call 911 to report power outages, call your electric company.
Charge your cell phone BEFORE the storm in case of power outages, ESPECIALLY
if it has replaced your home phone.
Have an emergency plan, noting where you would go, and when you would have
to leave to get there safely.
Both the National Hurricane Center and the Red Cross have excellent plans and
checklists available for your use.
